OSHA says a whopping 70% of forklift accidents could be prevented.
70%.
Google “top forklift accidents” and you’ll find an entertaining list of videos showing forklift operators doing stupid things and causing all kinds of problems. You’ll also find the occasional terrifying video where someone was seriously injured, even killed, in a forklift accident.
These videos tend to be entertaining only to someone who has never managed or worked in a warehouse or operated a forklift. For anyone who has, these videos (hopefully) hit a little too close to home.
Armed with the knowledge that most (70%) of forklift accidents can be prevented, here are the top 5 most critical forklift safety rules. Even if you just follow these (you should follow all the safety rules, of course) you will have a much safer facility.
- ALWAYS observe all the speed limits inside and outside your facility. OSHA defines a safe operating speed as that which ensures the truck can be brought to a stop in a safe manner. Consult with us, and with your warehouse management to determine what speed that is for your facility.
- Use safety accessories as often as possible, especially lights, horn, reverse alarms and lights.
- ALWAYS look in the direction of travel. If you are traveling in reverse, the driver must turn and face (as much as he/she can) in that direction. Do not trust or rely on your mirrors. If the load blocks your view moving forward, travel in reverse.
- Pedestrians should be aware of the location of forklifts always. They have the right of way in a warehouse, but awareness goes a long way towards keeping employees safe. Lighting attachments are great for alerting pedestrians of your location.
- Forklift operators should always be aware of the center of gravity of the truck, and ensure every load is balanced– taking extra care on ramps and uneven surfaces. In the event of a rollover, stay in the truck- avoid the urge to jump out of the cage.
